Dino-Roar

Limiter / Harmonic Detonator

Why it jumps out of the speaker

The DR-09 is a limiter and a distortion box that refuse to be separated. LEVEL is a shunt-JFET feedback limiter — the detector listens to the output, so the ratio is effectively infinite and gain reduction and harmonic mangling become the same event. CRUNCH is three discrete Class-A stages clipping asymmetrically, with operating points that drift under sustained level so the distortion breathes with the playing. STACK runs the limiter into the stages, which the hardware this descends from will not do.

About Dino-Roar

The DR-09 is a limiter and a distortion box that refuse to be separated. LEVEL is a shunt-JFET feedback limiter: the detector listens to the output, so the ratio is effectively infinite, and the JFET's channel resistance moves with the signal across it. Gain reduction and harmonic mangling are the same event. Twenty to thirty decibels of reduction is normal operation here, not abuse.

CRUNCH is a different animal — three discrete Class-A stages in series, clipping asymmetrically so even harmonics arrive first, with operating points that drift under sustained level. The distortion breathes with the playing instead of sitting still.

STACK runs the limiter into the stages. The hardware this descends from makes you pick one or the other. This doesn't.

Key features

Three modes. LEVEL for limiting, CRUNCH for the Class-A stages, STACK for both in series.

Two voices. MK1 is narrow and nasty; MK2 is full-bandwidth and better behaved.

Program-dependent release. FAST, MED and SLOW — a lone transient recovers quickly, sustained level lets go slowly, at every setting.

Sidechain filter. OFF, 100 or 250 Hz — the difference between a kick that detonates the whole mix and one that stays put.

TONE, pre or post. A passive-style two-pole low-pass you can put in front of the circuit or after it.

Delay-aligned MIX. Parallel crush that never comb-filters.

STOMP. Re-injects the transient energy the limiter shaves off, gated to attacks — the crushed body keeps its snap.

A second row the hardware never had room for. SAFE ceiling, stereo link, an external sidechain input, and M/S — detonate just the middle of the mix, or just the sides.

Metering that tells you something. A gain-reduction ladder in real decibels, peak-hold meters with latched clip lights, and the mood lamp — green while it limits, red while it distorts.

Everything nonlinear runs at 4x oversampling, and bypass is ramped, click-free and host-linked.

Quickstart tips

Start in LEVEL and push INPUT. The threshold never moves, so INPUT is the whole performance. Ten to twenty decibels on the ladder is a working setting, not a warning.

Pick the voice for the job. MK1 when you want attitude, MK2 when you want to keep the top end.

Use the sidechain filter on drums. At OFF the kick drives everything; at 100 or 250 the snare and cymbals keep their own dynamics.

MIX is how you get away with it. Crush it completely, then blend back until the dry signal is just being pushed from behind.

STACK is the loud one. When something has to jump out of the speaker, that's the mode.

Start from the factory bank. Parallel Jump, Drum Detonator, Vocal Attitude, Sneaky Glue, Crunch Guitar, Lo-Fi Break, Total Destruction and Bass Grind are the jobs it was built for.

More details

Is there a free trial?

Yes — 14 days, fully featured, from the first time the plugin loads. The whole signal path, every control, no interruptions and no signup. When the trial ends, audio passes through dry until a license is entered, so your sessions are never damaged.

Do I own this plugin forever?

Yes. It's a one-off purchase, not a subscription, and there's nothing to renew. Updates to a plugin you own are free — download the current installer and run it over the top.

Every plugin is sold on its own, so you can buy just the one you want.

How many computers can I install it on?

Your license works on all machines you personally own — studio desktop, laptop, spares. Enter the same key on each; there's nothing to deactivate and no activation server, so a machine dying never costs you a slot.

How do I get my download?

Your download link and license key are in the order confirmation email sent at purchase. Run the installer, open Coil, click the notice on the black band, paste the key — done.

Can't find the email? Check spam, then contact us and we'll resend it.

Can I run it offline?

Yes — after activation. Entering your license key needs an internet connection once; from then on the plugin runs fully offline and doesn't phone home.
