Where it goes

Four of the places it lives, each with a demo above.

  • Bass

Parallel distortion, delay-aligned, so the fundamental stays clean and the grind sits on top.

    Hear it
  • Drum bus

The feedback limiter squashes the kit into a wall, and the release breathes with the groove.

    Hear it
  • Electric guitar

Three Class-A clipping stages in a row: fuzz with the body of a real amp.

  • Keys

A Rhodes or a synth through the limiter alone gets louder, denser and a little wilder.

About Dino-Roar

The DR-09 is a limiter and a distortion box that refuse to be separated. LEVEL is a shunt-JFET feedback limiter: the detector listens to the output, so the ratio is effectively infinite, and the JFET's channel resistance moves with the signal across it. Gain reduction and harmonic mangling are the same event. Twenty to thirty decibels of reduction is normal operation here, not abuse.

CRUNCH is a different animal — three discrete Class-A stages in series, clipping asymmetrically so even harmonics arrive first, with operating points that drift under sustained level. The distortion breathes with the playing instead of sitting still.

STACK runs the limiter into the stages. Single-mode limiters make you pick one or the other. This doesn't.

Key features

  • Dino-Roar – Three modes

    Three modes

LEVEL for limiting, CRUNCH for the Class-A stages, STACK for both in series.

  • Dino-Roar – Two voices

    Two voices

MK1 is narrow and nasty; MK2 is full-bandwidth and better behaved.

  • Dino-Roar – Program-dependent release

    Program-dependent release

FAST, MED and SLOW — a lone transient recovers quickly, sustained level lets go slowly, at every setting.

  • Dino-Roar – Sidechain filter

    Sidechain filter

OFF, 100 or 250 Hz — the difference between a kick that detonates the whole mix and one that stays put.

  • Dino-Roar – TONE, pre or post

    TONE, pre or post

A passive-style two-pole low-pass you can put in front of the circuit or after it.

  • Dino-Roar – Delay-aligned MIX

    Delay-aligned MIX

    Parallel crush that never comb-filters.

  • Dino-Roar – STOMP

    STOMP

Re-injects the transient energy the limiter shaves off, gated to attacks — the crushed body keeps its snap.

  • Dino-Roar – A second row of controls of our own

A second row of controls of our own

SAFE ceiling, stereo link, an external sidechain input, and M/S — detonate just the middle of the mix, or just the sides.

  • Dino-Roar – Metering that tells you something

    Metering that tells you something

A gain-reduction ladder in real decibels, peak-hold meters with latched clip lights, and the mood lamp — green while it limits, red while it distorts.

Everything nonlinear runs at 4x oversampling, and bypass is ramped, click-free and host-linked.

Dino-Roar panel, with its controls numbered

The panel at a glance

  1. Input Drive into the circuit.
  2. Gain-reduction ladder Marked in real decibels, so you know exactly how hard it is crushing.
  3. Mood lamp Green while it limits, red while it distorts.
  4. Bypass True bypass, ramped and click-free.
  5. Tone A passive-style two-pole low-pass, dark to open, before or after the circuit.
  6. Stomp Re-injects the transient energy the limiter shaves off, so the crushed body keeps its snap.
  7. Mix Delay-aligned parallel blend: parallel crush that never comb-filters.
  8. Output Level, unity at 7.
  9. Switch decks Fold out Mode (Level, Crunch, Stack), the MK1 and MK2 voices, release speed, sidechain filter, Safe, Link and M/S.

More details

Is there a free trial?

Yes — 14 days, fully featured, from the first time the plugin loads. The whole signal path, every control, no interruptions and no signup. When the trial ends, audio passes through dry until a license is entered, so your sessions are never damaged.

Do I own this plugin forever?

Yes. It's a one-off purchase, not a subscription, and there's nothing to renew. Updates to a plugin you own are free — download the current installer and run it over the top.

Every plugin is sold on its own, so you can buy just the one you want.

How many computers can I install it on?

Your license covers up to 4 computers you personally own — studio desktop, laptop, spares. Enter the same key on each; the first activation on a machine takes one quick internet check; after that it works offline, apart from a once-a-day check for a newer version. Moving on from a computer? Deactivate This Machine in the plugin's preset menu hands the seat back, and if a machine dies before you can, just ask us.

How do I get my download?

Your download link and license key are in the order confirmation email sent at purchase. Run the installer, open Coil, click the notice on the black band, paste the key — done.

Can't find the email? Check spam, then contact us and we'll resend it.

Can I run it offline?

Yes — after activation. Entering your license key needs an internet connection once; from then on it works offline — the only other time it goes online is a once-a-day check for a newer version.

Tech specs

Mac: AU, VST3 and AAX — universal, native on Apple Silicon and Intel. macOS 10.15 or later.

Windows: VST3 and AAX, 64-bit Windows 10 or later.

DAWs: All major DAWs — Ableton Live, Pro Tools, Logic Pro, FL Studio, Cubase, Studio One, Bitwig, Reaper and Reason.

Oversampling: 4x, always on. Every nonlinear stage runs at four times the session rate to keep aliasing down. Low-latency filters, and the dry path is delay-matched, so the MIX knob stays phase-clean for parallel crush.
